MAKANAI was born in 2004 as a tribute to Yoshitaka Gold Leaf Foundry, founded in Kanazawa in 1899. In the intense heat and dry air of the foundry, female artisans worked daily, hammering gold into delicate, shimmering leaf.

Despite the demanding conditions, their hands remained remarkably soft and youthful. The secret lay in a natural fermented paste used in the production of washi paper, combined with their constant contact with gold. From this discovery, a tradition of natural skincare emerged, with its secrets passed down through generations.

A century later, this knowledge became the heart of MAKANAI.
