Women are at greater risk than men of developing iron deficiency mostly due to the menstrual cycle. More recently, studies have pointed out that hard training can block iron absorption for women, which makes it even easier for them to develop a deficiency with fatigue, poorer immune system and depression as common symptoms.

Iron is part of the blood's hemoglobin, the red blood cells and is needed to transport oxygen from the lungs out into the body's tissues. Folic acid is a B vitamin found in leafy vegetables and in liver. It is needed for cell division and the body's protein metabolism.
