Spirulina is a microscopic freshwater alga that is a dark blue-green powder when dried. Spirulina has a long service life as a food product: since ancient times it has been a rich source of food in many cultures, for example, in America, Africa and the Middle East.

More than 60% of the weight of spirulina is a full-fledged protein. In addition, it is rich in trace elements such as iron, magnesium, calcium, zinc and potassium, as well as vitamins such as vitamin B12 and vitamin A precursors (carotenoids).

Spirulina has no cell walls, which is why it is easily digested in the process of digestion. As the name implies, the spirulina has a spiral-shaped structure. The intense blue-green color of spirulina is due to the rich content of leafy green, as well as a rare blue color pigment, phycocyanin.

The first documented report of spirulina dates back to the 1500s, and spirulina is believed to have been an important source of nutrients for Aztecs and Mesoamericans. Especially famous spirulina became after that, the US space agency NASA successfully used it as a dietary supplement for astronauts in space missions. According to NASA, the nutritional value of 1000 kg of fruits and vegetables corresponds to one kilogram of spirulina. Therefore, NASA and the European Space Agency proposed to use spirulina in long-term space missions as the main source of food.
